Abroad in San Sebastian, Spain
The Magic Roast's foreign correspondent, reporting live from a cafe in San Sebastián, on the Basque Coast.
Okay - this is getting a bit ridiculous, no? I accidentally give a guy the login details to my bank account, and next minute he’s reporting in from Europe.
I’m glad Matt managed to find time to file a story, in between the surf, yoga, ‘work’ and coffee. What a legend.
The days are baking and the surf is endless. Every day is groundhog day, with blue skies, warm waves, brown eyes, and warm smiles everywhere you go.
The coffee scene here is small but totally solid, and I have frequented two superb specialty coffee shops on endless repeat. My two favourite cafes are OhBaba and Old Town Coffee. Visiting both of these establishments is utterly mandatory next time you’re up this way!
OhBaba
OhBaba is a wee vegan establishment which is making a huge effort to serve up exciting, satisfying, and healthy snacks and meals, as well as sensational coffee.
It took me three days to clock their menu, and I’m currently attempting a second pass at it all now. I love this place for bringing together new flavours, and presenting everything on the plate with so much care. I feel like I’m devouring art, and I’ve just been so enchanted to see what flairs and twists they decide to bring to each dish.
Because it’s a cool relaxed open vibe I’ve been working from here each day, which has made it significantly easier to work my way through their menu.
It’s not all just about drinking incred coffee either. Their spiced tumeric rocks, hot and cold, their matcha rocks, hot and cold. There is a collection of kombuchas, and there are even incredible sounding mocktails. Old Town Coffee
Support The Magic Roast’s European correspondent by buying him a coffee. I’ll make sure he gets the hook up!
Old Town Coffee
Old Town Coffee is a roastery, and so their coffee is absolutely superb, as you would expect.
Their food is delicious, and again, the atmosphere is cool. There are a few outside tables that allow you to soak up the atmosphere in the usual European fashion.
The staff at both establishments are absolute champs, and their passion for coffee is contagious. I’m utterly addicted to oat milk lattes, frío (cold), served equally incredibly from either venue.
The drinks are just so good at both places that every day I work from these cafes in San Sebastián I completely OD on coffee. Like an addict I could quit any time I want, but it’s my choice, and I have every right to choose not to quit drinking coffee. And just like that you manage to drop 80€ in two cafes, which isn’t bad for 7.5 hours of office space, 2 bags of coffee, 3 meals, 6 sensational drinks, a cookie, and some sweet yarns.
Well, the waves are getting high and the sun is getting low, it’s time to wrap up this post and hit the surf. Foreign coffee correspondent out.
Righto - better go check the old bank account - I think this guy is taking the micky.
Thanks Matt!
