Welcome to The Magic Roast! Your regular update on all things coffee (mostly), running (sometimes) and other stuff (many times). Support The Magic Roast by sharing this post (if you like it. If you hate it, share it even wider to teach me a lesson!).
Another summer brings another review of the cold coffee options available to the weary, thirsty and hot (or those wishing they were hot).
This is part 3 in what is now a regular series, having first reviewed cold cans in 2023 and 2024.
And this is going to be the first part of a 2025 summer special - cos there are like a brazillian options now.
For this yarn, I got my hands on the new range of Flight Coffee cans (last year’s cans are old news) and Allpress cans from my local Z Petrol Station - easily accessible on any roadie across the countryside this summer.
To kick things off, the best of the bunch.
Yummy yummy yummy
Flight Coffee - Caramel Frappe 9/10
So damn tasty. It might be the best coffee-based drink I’ve ever had.
Think caramel dairy milk yogurt or Primo. It has a very strong, pleasant caramel flavour, sweet but not sickly sweet.
The coffee flavour is on the back burner here, so it might be a stretch to call it a ‘cold coffee’, but it’s not trying to be that – it’s so much better.
Would trade again.
Flight Coffee Mocca 9/10
This drink rocks so hard.
They've nailed the choc taste, which is really hard to do. It doesn't taste artificial or weird - it tastes like a quality choc drink – think Lewis Road Creamery vibes. Whole thing tastes like a choc milkshake.
Like the Caramel Frappe, the coffee taste is muted but defiantly there.
Flight Coffee Iced Latte 8/10
Unlike the Caramel Frappe, the coffee flavour really shines here. It has an excellent, coffee forward flavour that isn't hidden by any additional ingredients or sweetness - just coffee and milk.
And by ‘just coffee' really mean ‘excellent coffee’ - of course it is. It's Flight.
If you’re after a cold coffee, rather than a cold coffee-based drink, this is the one the wrap your lips around.
These are good – you wouldn’t kick yourself for trying them
Allpress Latte 7/10
The first thing you notice when comparing the Allpress to the Flight, is how dark the Allpress drinks are. I think this is because they use less milk, and as a result, the coffee flavour is much stronger.
Super nice drink, with a super creamy texture, and not as sweet as the Flight cans, if that is important to you.
Flight Coffee Black Coffee 7/10
Very enjoyable indeed. The coffee flavour is very nice, and you can taste the subtle flavour notes of the coffee (orange, caramel and cacao nib according to the can).
The closest to just have a cold brewed or cold espresso coffee amongst all of these options.
Flight Coffee Vanilla Frappe 7/10
Pretty solid drink overall. Attempts to be like a vanilla ice cream but the coffee flavour sings more and makes it much more (pleasantly) caramel and coffee based vibes.
Creamy and great to drink. Not as good as the Caramel Frappe, but pretty good.
Allpress Mocca 7/10
This was quite nice, and had a lot less sugar than the Flight Coffee version. As a result, the coffee flavour was stronger (a good thing) but wasn’t as creamy or silky in the mouth.
If having a bit less sugar in your life is important to you, then this would be the go.
The others
Flight Coffee Oat Flat White 6/10
What’s the difference between the Flat White and Latte in the Flight range? They use oat milk for the Flatty.
A solid can, though not my favourite, even though I am an oat milk fan. There was a slight chalky mouthfeel to this one at first that wasn’t super pleasant, but that seemed to disappear after a few sips.
The oat milk does work well with the Flight Coffee and it wouldn’t be a terrible choice if you wanted to avoid diary.
Allpress Black Coffee 6/10
Straight up black coffee. From the texture it felt like this was made from a cold brew style coffee rather than espresso.
No sugar just straight up black coffee.
This would be a good alternative to an energy drink if you needed a caffeine hit without all the other stuff.
Happy summer of driving
Get a cold can in ya and search for the sun - it’s out there, I’m sure!
Next month I’ll be wrapping my lips around the Boss range of coffee cans - they’re pretty iconic and it’ll be interesting to see how they stack up against the local favs.
