Tēnā koutou whānau. I hope you have recovered from the King’s coronation. It was so exciting, am I right? Anyway, here are some things you should know.
In this week’s edition: WAC is in Melbz; Decarbonising roasting; Smashing Kickstarter records.
2023 World Aeropress Champs - Melbourne
BREAKING NEWS - The 2023 World AeroPress Champs will be held in Melbourne in December.
Being so close to home, the 2023 New Zealand representative will feel right at home, and this year might be the year a Kiwi takes it out.
No word yet on when and where the New Zealand AeroPress champs will be held, but word on the street is that there will be a new host taking over the reigns from Ozone Coffee Roasters.

Decarbonising the coffee industry
Climate change is having a big impact on crops all over the world and coffee isn’t immune.
Coffee roasting uses heat to turn the green bean into delicious treats. That energy is generally provided by natural gas. Coffee roasting contributes about 4kT CO2e during the roasting process. Efforts are underway here to reduce that and to find more sustainable ways to roast coffee.
EECA is developing the Coffee Decarbonisation Pathway, alongside the New Zealand Speciality Coffee Association (legends!).
It’s being designed to support coffee roasters with reducing their energy relations emissions through tailored tools, resources and support.
According to EECA: “The pathway has been broken up into 5 steps, which provide important information for New Zealand coffee roasters no matter how far along the decarbonisation journey you are. “
It’s a big job and there’s still a lot more to do, but it’s great to see the Government supporting industries to decarbonise in a managed and supportive way.

Most funded food Kickstarter?
Sprudge reported a few weeks back that the Meticulous Espresso machine is looking like breaking records and becoming the most funded food related Kickstarter ever.
Meticulous Espresso touts itself as the “world’s first robotic lever espresso machine” as well as the “first home espresso machine with an integrated high-precision scale.”
At time of writing, it has raised over $7.2 million NZD, and it has three days left in the campaign.
Sounds like a winner right? But bear in mind that the Kickstarter landscape is littered with disasters, scams and fk ups.
James Hoffmann did a great video about another Kickstarter that went off the rails… Proceed with caution!
On The Magic Roast - ICYMI
And finally, in case you missed it, The Magic Roast came hard at Wellington last week with a blistering response to the city’s ‘shock omission’ from a silly wee top 50 list.
The story seems to have touched a nerve, but in a positive way. People want the coffee scene to keep pushing those boundaries and getting back to the leading edge.
The Village Snob at Home had a great analysis on their Instagram:
It’s our fault and we have the power to fix that!
