Nau mai hoki mai - welcome back to You Oughta Know, your somewhat regular coffee news hit to the veins.
Winter is here, though the winter lurgy seemed to have hit a month ago. Ups, downs, snot and sniffles - it’s been a weird month at TMR Towers.
That hasn’t stopped us from drinking great coffee and keeping our eye on the kumara vines to keep across the hottest coffee news.

Nico is off to Copenhagen for the World Latte Art Champs
Tsubasa Nico Nozaki from Wellington’s Flight Coffee, is off to Copenhagen for the World Latte Art Champs, which kicks off next week.
Nico won the New Zealand Latte Art Champs in 2023 to get the chance to represent us on the big stage in Copenhagen.
The World Latte Art Champs showcases the best artistic expression in the world of milk beverages.
It’s a strange corner of the barista competition world. The art has no actual impact on the flavor of the coffee, but when you’re presented with an amazing artistic display, made out of milk, the coffee just tastes better.
All the pours, thrills and spills will be live streamed on the World Coffee Championships website, here.
Nico is on at 8:32am on Thursday 27 June Copenhagen time, which is about 6:32pm New Zealand time. No excuses - tune in!
A huge amount of good luck and aroha to Nico. Hope ya smash it!
Sprudge: The stunning carbon costs of WBC
The world barista champs have an important role to play in pushing innovation and the boundaries of coffee, but they come at a massive environmental costs.
Sprudge reports on a study done by Kaffeemacher, the roaster represented at the 2024 WBC by German competitor Felix Hohlmann, who calculated the emissions they created to put a competitor on the world stage.
Here’s the breakdown:
Interesting to think about. Getting competitors from New Zealand to these places must have a bigger impact.
Given the impact of climate on coffee production, there could be a case for the industry not contributing to that. Interesting to think about and keep an eye on.
Maybe the format of these champs will change?
Turfed out of a coffee shop
You’ve done it. I’ve done it. We all do it.
Hanging out at a cafe, drinking coffee and ‘working’ is actually great. It can be incredibly productive to get out of the usual scene to work remotely. And it’s great to support local cafes right?
Well, one Napier cafe doesn’t think so.
Smiths cafe kicked out the deputy editor of Hawkes Bay Today, Mark Story, for not spending enough while he worked, even though it appears that the cafe wasn’t busy and he wasn’t taking up space.
Seems like a weird one. How much do you need to spend to call a cafe your office? Is it fair to do it at all? Would cafe’s prefer that customer didn’t bother going? Or is 30 minutes the natural time limit for these things?
A pretty funny yarn, for all the wrong reasons.
